colorblock crochet washcloth pattern

Today I have a simple little crochet project for you all that works up quickly, is really useful, and makes a great gift! Pretty good, right?

Cotton washcloths are a perfect beginner project, but they are also great for any level crocheter who wants a project that won’t take forever to complete. I especially love making washcloths in the summer when I don’t want to be buried under piles of wool.

I really like these particular little washcloths because they use one of my favorite stitches, the Lemon Peel Stitch, which gives them lots of yummy texture, and they have a simple color block design that gives them a modern look. Let’s make some!

This pattern uses American crochet terms.

Row 1: With Color A, work 32 foundation single crochet stitches (I really love the foundation single crochet stitch and highly recommend learning it. I have a detailed photo tutorial and video tutorial explaining it right here.) OR chain 33 and then work a sc in the second ch from the hook and every other chain (32 sc in total).

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in the same stitch, *dc in the next st, sc in the next st, repeat from * across the row. When you are done you should have 16 sc stitches and 16 dc stitches that alternate.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in the same stich, *dc in the next st, sc in the next st, repeat from * across the row. When you are done you should have 16 sc stitches and 16 dc stitches that alternate. (Note: sc stitches will always be worked into dc stitches, and vice versa. This is what gives the washcloth it’s pretty texture.)

Rows 4 – 12: Repeat Row 3. After Row 12, finish off Color A. Weave in ends with your yarn needle.

Row 13: Join Color B in the last stitch worked. Ch 1, sc in the same stitch, *dc in the next st, sc in the next st, repeat from * across the row. When you are done you should have 16 sc stitches and 16 dc stitches that alternate. (Note: sc stitches will always be worked into dc stitches, and vice versa.)

Row 14: Ch 1, sc in the same stitch, *dc in the next st, sc in the next st, repeat from * across the row. When you are done you should have 16 sc stitches and 16 dc stitches that alternate. (Note: sc stitches will always be worked into dc stitches, and vice versa.)

Row 15 – 32: Repeat Row 14. After Row 32, finish off and weave in ends with your yarn needle.

And, That’s it!

These washcloths sure are pretty, but they also happen to scrub and clean really well too.
